Verisign Q2 2016 Domain Name Industry Brief: Internet Grows to Approximately 334.6 Million Domain Names in the Second Quarter of 2016

Today, we released the latest issue of the Domain Name Industry Brief, which showed that the internet grew by approximately 7.9 million domain name registrations in the second quarter of 2016, and closed with a base of 334.6 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs). This is a 2.4 percent increase over the first quarter of 2016.

.com and .net Breakdown

The .com and .net TLDs experienced aggregate growth, reaching a combined total of approximately 143.2 million domain name registrations in the domain name base in the second quarter of 2016. In the second quarter, Verisign processed 8.6 million new domain name registrations for .com and .net, as compared to 8.7 million domain names for the same period in 2015.

Total country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) reached approximately 149.9 million domain name registrations at the end of the second quarter of 2016, with an increase of 1.4 million domain name registrations, or a 1.0 percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2016.

New gTLD Breakdown

As of June 30, 2016, new gTLD (ngTLD) registrations totaled 22.0 million, which represents 6.6 percent of total domain name registrations. The top 10 ngTLDs represented 61.5 percent of all ngTLD domain name registrations. The following chart shows ngTLD domain name registrations as a percentage of overall TLD domain name registrations, and also the top 10 ngTLDs as a percentage of all ngTLD domain name registrations for the second quarter of 2016.

DNS Query Load

Verisign’s average daily Domain Name System (DNS) query load during the second quarter of 2016 was approximately 130 billion queries across all TLDs operated by Verisign, with a peak of nearly 179 billion queries. Quarter over quarter, the daily average query load increased 4.9 percent and the peak decreased by 5.0 percent. Year over year, the daily average query load increased 17.0 percent, and the peak decreased by 1.5 percent.
